River Street, Savannah: the cobblestone waterfront

River Street is Savannah's old cotton waterfront: cobblestones, warehouse shops and ships gliding past on the river. Here is how to see it and what to combine.

River Street runs for about a mile along the south bank of the Savannah River. In the 1800s these buildings stored cotton waiting for ships; today they hold shops, galleries, sweet shops and family restaurants. The cobblestone streets were laid with stones brought as ballast on sailing ships. This guide is independent and not run by the city.
